Columbia County 4-H and SAU students assists with Hurricane Ida relief

Families and friends of Columbia County 4-H members loaded an entire SUV with water, drink mixes, snacks, soft drinks, canned goods, cleaning supplies, and first aid kits to Southern Louisiana 4-H families.

Bethlehem Community Kids, Shiloh Lamartine, Taylor Roaring Tigers, Teen Leaders, and Unity 4-H all lent a hand to ensure a successful donation drive. An estimated $750 worth of supplies was collected within the first week of the drive.

The Union County 4-H coordinated with Lafourche Parish 4-H to help distribute these supplies to the 4-H families there.

Students of Southern Arkansas University, also, came together to collect supplies to send to Lafourche, Parish. SAU began collecting items on September 7th. All the groups that are responsible for joining forces are the athletic groups, Greeks, Housing, AmeriCorps VISTA, Mulerider Market, Student Activities, Aramark Food Services, College of Education, and Human Performance, as well as, many other students and members of the community.

Vice President of Student Affairs had this to say about SAU students, “I am so proud of our campus-wide effort. The unique caring that SAU is known for was evident and has come through for the people of Raceland in a huge way.”

A new faculty member with connections to Raceland, Arien Faucett, is the one to thank for calling attention to the needs of those stricken by the disaster. “I am completely inspired by and in awe of the SAU community,” said Faucett. “To say that they quickly rallied the necessary people would be an understatement."

Students and faculty members at SAU raised a collective trailer full worth of supplies. Items included in the hall were hygiene products, tarps, bottled water, cleaning supplies, and work gloves.
